Fingers in my hair

Sleepless nights have become a norm

Lying in bed in the dark, staring blindly at nothing

‘coz sleep won’t come, no matter how hard I try

Everything hurts

And stress almost burns my insides

I miss the time when he’d run his fingers through my hair

Lull me to sleep

The feeling of safety

That someone is keeping watch while I drift off

That soothing touch

Of fingers running through my hair

He’d know when I needed it

I’d snuggle in closer

Almost cat like

Nudge his arm if he wasn’t paying attention

He’d laugh and put down whatever he was doing

And turn to me

So he could run his fingers through my hair

And I could fall asleep

That feeling of absolute contentment

Of certainty

That I’ll be soon asleep

Because his fingers are weaving magic in my hair

Now I lie sleepless

Night after night

Wondering what I must do to get that comfort back
